QGIS-US Updates

Jun 9, 2026 | Default

I said at the start of the year I wanted to blog once a week. I’ve been simplifying my website and I just want to put “more stuff” out there. Some posts may be work related – some may not be.

So this isn’t work – but it is work: QGIS-US.

I’ve not said a ton about the QGIS-US Group because I’ve been busy organizing meetings and trying to get some work done for clients. Someone asked “what’s the plan” and my answer was “To have a functional QGIS US users group”. Of course….what does “functional” even mean.

So I’ve been doing some research into other QGIS groups and how to they function. Some have a membership. The ones that are current usually have regular meetings both in-person and virtual and donate back to the project. Which does mean I need to start working on a more formal organization.

So what are we doing now?

  • I’m attempting to hold a meeting on the third or fourth Tuesday of the month. Usually it’s the third BUT – it depends on the speaker. Meetings are broadcast for all to attend regardless of location.
  • I resurrected an old Youtube channel which has been renamed and we’re putting videos up there as we hold meetings: https://www.youtube.com/@qgis_us_2026
  • We have a linkedin group thanks to Cam Denny: QGIS US Linkedin Page
  • VPAT and other things. Got a second call on whether QGIS gets a WCAG 2.X form . I pieced together a VPAT/WCAG form last year. Now I’ll piece this together.

All of this reminds me of my illustrious career on GIS boards. I’ve always walked into boards that are established. I’ve never “given birth” to one. So that’s a bit exciting and intimidating.

Anyway – I have a whole host of things I need to do so if you’re up for helping give me a shout (rjhale at northrivergeographic.com). I need help with the website. I need help with speakers. The VPAT/WCAG form mentioned above.

It’s exciting times.
