QGIS Offline Help

Aug 5, 2026 | QGIS

Through a long series of events I found myself teaching QGIS in a classroom again. It’s been a while. I used to just “hold” classes and sometime during the pandemic I jsut stopped. Occasionally I’ll get a call for 3 or 4 people that want training but generally I’ve been moving stuff online.

For added mysteriousness:

So during training, the question came up on basically “What do you do when you have no internet access”. I hardly ever “Don’t have internet” but I tend to fantasize occasionally about being completely disconnected and “What would I do?”….besides break out my compass and try to remember how to shoot bearings….or is it Azimuths.

How do you get help for QGIS? The help button is on the interface and jumps to the online docs. If you go here: https://www.qgis.org/resources/hub/ you can download PDFS or HTMLS of the online docs. I grabbed the english HTML and moved that to my Documents location.

Then went into options in QGIS and defined a “local” help file under systems.

When I am offline – I have help. Of course online will give you the most current version of the LTR help but if you find yourself at the beach with no internet and you just have to know something you now have a fighting chance or reading the help and not staring

I said at the start of the year I wanted to blog once a week. I've been simplifying my website and I just want to put "more stuff" out there. Some posts may be work related - some may not be. So this isn't work - but it is work: QGIS-US. I've not said a ton about the...
