QGIS Fun: Chickamauga Mound

Jun 12, 2026 | QGIS

I’ve been trying to stop once a week and do something fun with QGIS.

Post Heart Incident I do a lot of walking. I’ve been re-exploring some places I used to go in town to exercise and one is the TN River Walk. I realized the other day I needed to do some OpenStreetMap updating along the riverwalk. So what did I find….A sign I’ve been walking past and ignoring. It’s a historic marker for an Indian mound probably 500 feet off the main path….and it’s sitting next to a manufacturing facility because we apparently enjoyed bulldozing Indian Mounds in the 70s and 80s.

I went to the USGS Lidar Site and we have brand new (within the last year) LIDAR data of the area. I used a couple of display tools for the QGIS project to give the LIDAR Points a more solid look.

In 3D:

So now I can see the building and the clump of trees. If I run the elevation Profile tool:

I have a 3 meter hill under the trees. Finally if I build a DEM from the LIDAR (using Triangulation and a 5 foot grid):

This make it slightly more fun because I can at least see it with out the vegetation. Here is an article from last year on the Chickamauga mound.

Anyway – my fun thing for this week with QGIS. A little 3D. Some LIDAR. PLus playing around with Symbology.

I can sum it up: It's not much of one. Way back in my younger days I was infatuated with ArcPlot (which was the plotting portion of ArcINFO). From there I moved to Arcview, ArcMap, and eventually here to QGIS. All of my work typically revolves around Data. I usually...

Tricks with an ESRI File Geodatabase

A few years back I jumped in way over my head with QGIS/Postgis. I had moved a process out of one software and into my favorite two (QGIS/PostGIS) and little did I know the final output had to be a ESRI File Geodatabase. So what did I do? I shamed them into using a...
