I said this year I was going to babble up here more and I’ve basically not been because I tend to loose interest in whatever I’m about to say. I’ve got to change up my attitude on all things technical….and not technical.
So the classes are starting to come out on the training.northrivergeographic.com site:
- I’ve started looking at transitioning the Intro to QGIS class to cover 3.44. The good thing is – I can issue a QGIS certificate due to a few tricks I left in the class. So that’s a bonus.
- I also pushed the QGIS tips and Tricks up there for Free. I did that one back at a conference and I’m going to keep updating it with random things that qgis can do. No certificate for that class.
I won’t lie and say the Training site hasn’t been a bit therapeutic.
Of course now I’m debating what’s next.
- Tempted to do a GDAL training workshop which would be a brand new. Except – I think the tutorials on the GDAL website work well.
- Moving the Model Designer workshop up there – which will most likely happen next.
- Cartography. I’ve been slowly doing more cartography and I’m by no means an expert BUT people have asked.
- GRASS? There are a lot of Tutorials on GRASS out and about. Maybe. Maybe not.
- I’ve threatened a PostGIS workshop for years. Question is “can the student get it installed?”. That’s the first bump in the road.
Two Fantasy Classes:
- Forestry
- Environmental

In the before times, my intro to GIS was doing environmental work. Basically we were doing a ton of data collection on the behalf of clients to feed into models and those models would give you an idea to watershed health. That’s old and outdated BUT I don’t see a ton of people using QGIS in their non-profit environmental space. Granted ESRI does have a pretty nice “package deal” for non-profits – but QGIS brings community. The downside is I’ve been out of that space for a good bit. I would like to do something to benefit the Environmental Non-profits.
Not being a forester, I have done a lot of forestry GIS projects. They tend to have a common thread. Generally they are wrestling with custom software packages or wrestling their way through GPS/Spreadsheet issues. I tend to enjoy those projects when they come through – but do I know enough from my work to offer some sort of training aimed at the forestry crowd? It’s a thought.
Anyway – watch for the Model Designer class to go up next. Maybe the cartography thing will happen.
