I had mentioned it some but it’s probably been coming up on 6 months since I even mentioned training.
Right before I decided to attempt to die in 2025 I had started building a training website at training.northrivergeographic.com. Basically it’s my Intro to QGIS class spelled out. The plan is to add more training but I’ve been a bit uninspired.
So with QGIS 4.2 looming as the next LTR – It’s time to update the Class. Updating it won’t be hard – I’ve written it in such a way that the worst thing I have to do with a new release is update changes to the base of QGIS and make new screenshots where necessary.
It’s actually been a bit useful because if I run into someone who wants to take the training BUT can’t pay – I send a coupon code.
What I have learned:
- With a free code – you won’t finish the class. Hopefully you get through enough to Get something out of it.
- With a paid class – there’s a 50/50 shot you won’t finish it.
- I could never write a book
- I’m going to make the most expensive class $75 US. If there’s one that is $75 you’re probably getting a QGIS certificate and that costs $25 US. How am I doing that? You have to pass the quizzes in the Introductory Class.
Anyway – it’s been a year of learning how the new website works and how classes work. I started putting the modelbuilder class up there and stopped because I just wasn’t excited putting that one up there. Why was it such a struggle? I think I’ve deviated off what I originally wanted to do which is an Intro, “intermediate”, and somehow an advanced class. So – I think I’m going to change up my original plan to take all my “normal” classes and push them online -I think some of those stay in person.
In other news I’ve actually been contacted about doing in person QGIS training that has nothing to do with a conference. So that hasn’t happened since the COVID days. There are lots of reasons on why that is happening – but there’s no need to hash them over up here.
I’ve been cutting back on conference training. You are probably saying “but all that exposure…..for free……”. There is some exposure but overall I’d rather Go for a hike before the conference or just sit at the login desk and roast friends that come in. I will probably still do training occasionally at conferences but I’m gong to slow down that side of my life.
