QGIS: Tips and Tricks

May 16, 2023 | QGIS

A new class. A new 4 hour class I should say. The FOSS4GNA call for papers/workshops is currently ongoing. I’ve decided to change things up a bit and not submit an intro class but try a “QGIS: Tips and Tricks” class. That was my submission and hopefully it gets some traction at the conference.

While I was at the TN GIS meeting I did a Mergin Maps Class. During that class I realized that I wasn’t quite hitting on all cylinders because you really needed a strong Intro to QGIS before tackling Mobile and I’m a bit tired of Intro – it’s a good class but I like things a bit more complicated. During the last Intro class I realized I wasn’t hitting on all cylinders because most everyone there wanted something a little more advanced….but not advanced.

I’m going to cover about 16 topics (or 12 or 10 or whatever) over 4 hours. A few topics I’ve covered in classes and a few I’ve covered on the blog but with working examples we can all work through. As of today the list will be (and it’s going to change):

  • Release Schedule (probably will be tossed)
  • QGIS Projects
  • Profiles
  • Geopackages
  • Forms
  • CAD Tools
  • Temporal Controller
  • SQL
  • Virtual Layers
  • Geoprocessing
  • Command Line Tools
  • Model Builder
  • GPS Panel
  • Views

I want to cap it at 16 things so I may shed the release cycle for aggregate functions. I may add something else in and make it 17 things. Whatever the case – it will be 4 hours so maybe we don’t cover everything but you get everything for the class.

Pricing and scheduling is coming in the next week or so. I figure if I devote an hour or two a day to this I should have it done shortly and ready for a test run.

QGIS US – September 22nd 2026 EDT

It's been a while since I've done a QGIS US meeting. Part of it was burnout and part I've been busy with work and life. So we're talking projections tomorrow. Proj is a bigger project than just QGIS - but it's nice to know how that project is moving along. Meeting...

QGIS Offline Help

Through a long series of events I found myself teaching QGIS in a classroom again. It's been a while. I used to just "hold" classes and sometime during the pandemic I jsut stopped. Occasionally I'll get a call for 3 or 4 people that want training but generally I've...
