Southeast OSGEO Chapter

Apr 11, 2015 | Georgia, North Carolina, Open Source GIS, Tennessee

HUH?

I know – one more group of “GIS” centric people but this one will be a bit different. I’m announcing the formation of the OSGEO Southeast US Chapter. Will it be an official chapter? I have no idea. Right now we have people from Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia involved and there seems to be enough momentum to make it happen. I want more Open Source GIS in the area. I think there are enough people interested to make this a reality.

  • Am I advocating the downfall of ESRI? Before that gets passed around no – I’m advocating for the best tool for the job. My GIS Toolset is a mix of everything under the sun including ESRI Software. This chapter will be devoted to Open Source though – so that will be our primary worry.
  • HOLY CRAP BUT WE HAVE SAMSOG, GA URISA, NCURISA, SE GITA, TNGIC, CUMBERLAND URISA……What are you going to do differently? The mission of the Southeast US OSGEO Group is to build upon the Mission and Goals of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) by providing local networking and support opportunities and by advocating for Open Source GIS software and OSGeo initiatives through regional groups and conferences.  So – we aren’t competing. Don’t want to compete. We are headed in a slightly different direction. So join them all – and us.
  • Who do you want in the group? Everyone. List any common current description for anyone and everyone and that’s who we want. I must preface that with Nice though. We do tend to get technical and get lost in the minutia – So all you have to do is be nice.
  • Meetings? Who knows. I’m working on that one. I will push for meetings to start happening a bit organically. So there will be some in Atlanta. Raleigh…..wherever. Will I be at all of them. NOPE.

So join us. Learn about some new software. Learn some new tricks.

Or email me – we will get started making something fun and very cool.

I edited ArcPy Code

It made me sad. I'm working on a project involving 911 data and it's made me do quite a bit of thinking. The short story on this is it's not in Tennessee. I'm taking data in it's raw form and shoving it into that state's NG911 format. So I have about half of it...

QGIS Support Redux

Back to QGIS ramblings. I mentioned in a previous blog post I was doing QGIS support specifically for one company but in reality it's been about every client where I install QGIS. The one company turned into a retainer where I tested the waters of "can I do this?"....
