Almost 11 months later

Dec 1, 2025 | Default, Rambling, Small Business

I’ve been trying to write my thoughts down more and have just been lost in life. The last 30 days have had me in Oak Ridge, Murfreesboro, and Reston Virginia. Yet another reason I mumble I really need to cut down on traveling. Which reminds me I need to discuss Foss4GNA 2025 sooner than later.

I haven’t been to the Doctor in 3 months. Which is completely insane for me to say but I’ve been doing well enough that once I got through all the normal doctor visits that revolve around your heart – things got boring.

  • I’ve been walking a lot. I need to get some new shoes.
  • Did a 10 mile canoe trip with ease.
  • I’ve not been on my bike lately but that’s on my list.

One the paddling front I had Swim the Suck which is a 10ish mile paddle through the Tennessee River Gorge.

How did my swimmer do? No Clue. I think we fell out in the upper half of the group. The group consists of about 150 swimmers plus 150 boats plus some extra everything thrown in. My job is to make sure she doesn’t drown and is fed and doesn’t get hypothermic. It’s also weird because at the start of these events they ask “Is there anything we need to know about your health?” and of course the answer is both yes and no. It’s weird having to explain the yes.

With things getting back to normal I tackled more jeep repair. You are looking at a 25 year old Brake Drum that gave up and leaked all my brake fluid out. So I fixed it. Mostly. Keeping a 25 year old jeep on the road can be a religious experience. Now I have a check engine light on and I think something electronic gave up.

With paddling and Jeep repair it makes me wonder about life outside of Geo. I do enjoy it but at some point in the past 3 years I’ve noticed the fire has died down a bit. I was cracking on ESRI at one meeting and that night I was wondering why I said anything. Of course it’s fun to poke at a billion dollar company – but at this point it’s a bit less fun than it used to be. Of course that goes for about everything these days – some things are a bit less fun. Some things are more fun.

In the early days of the pandemic I set a goal to canoe for 5 hours every month. Which – once you do that you’re either going out for 2 2.5 hour sessions or all day. This year it’s going to be camping. Go sleep outside once a month for a year. Cold. Wet. Sunny. Hot. Go be outside. Outside gives me the best return on investment these days.

Anyway – there is my non-geo post for this week. I’ve actually got a pile of stuff to talk about on the GEO front and I need to get that written down.

Go do something fun!

I edited ArcPy Code

It made me sad. I'm working on a project involving 911 data and it's made me do quite a bit of thinking. The short story on this is it's not in Tennessee. I'm taking data in it's raw form and shoving it into that state's NG911 format. So I have about half of it...
