Symbology

Once you have added data to QGIS – What are your options for Symbolization?

Add the Layer Styling Panel:

The layer styling panel allows you to live update the colors in your data layer.  When you select a layer select:

  • Simple Fill
  • Simple Line
  • Simple Marker

From there you have the option of completely changing ever part of the symbology. Want to outline your polygon with markers? You can do it.

What if you want custom marker symbols in QGIS? Maybe you need a special symbol to show handicap parking or water wells or police stations?

QGIS uses SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) as it’s marker format. If you look under the install directory for QGIS you will see an SVG directory that holds all the symbols for QGIS. You can also add more symbols using the settings -> options  -> System under the QGIS main menu.

If you need to make new symbols you can use Inkscape.

Need to label your data? To go the label tab in the layer styling panel.

You can also right click your data layer and go to properties and access the Symbology  and Label Tab. From there you can save your symbols setting to a QML file. That file can be shared with other users and other data layers.

LAYOUTS!
