Red Bank High School – Year 4

Mar 4, 2013 | Do Some Good, Education

So yeah – it’s not been easy doing this. Really – it’s been beyond hard. I’m running out of time for stuff like this. It’s irritating.

Anyway – I returned for another round of OSM – this makes the 7th or 8th time we’re done this. You’ve heard me complain about the computers. Half don’t have adobe flash. Half are windows XP. Half don’t work half the time. All have administrator privileges so locked down it makes me scream.

I walked into this:

I would love to say I did something. I didn’t – except show up and say GIS and OpenStreetMap a lot. The teacher on the other hand took a few awards from last year and pushed to get a new lab. A BIG NEW LAB. Politics at the school level is an interesting thing. Nothing should have been this hard. It was. I mentioned how I thought the amount of red tape was complete BS.

So for those of you who have been keeping up:

  • One kid is now a marine – and his user name has stuck to him forever – Fluffy. I know not is Fluffy still even maps. I hope. I hope Fluffy is fine and well out there.
  • One kid went to UTK and took some form of Geography class – he shocked the room by pulling out some OSM knowledge. He came back to Red Bank and told the teacher.
  • One kid is going on an archeology dig to the middle east (I think) because she’s familiar enough with GIS to actually be dangerous.
  • Three awards for the School.
  • One award for me. Which I really would have preferred not to win because I had to stand in front of people.
  • A new computer lab which will be if I have my way a mixed environment of ArcGIS and FOSS4G.

Oh yeah…and this:

That would be a Canon Plotter.

So for those of you in GIS….get out and volunteer. Nothing bad can come of it.

QGIS at the Hike Inn

QGIS Workshop – Online?

OK - so as part of my digestion of last weeks FOSS4GNA 2016 conference I had a couple of suggestions from people that tool the QGIS class or had taken it before. Why not do it online? Well - I did last year. It sucked. I did a self paced course and the demand was low...
