“Stormwater Runoff: A Case Study of the Correlation between Relative Hydrologic Soil Group and Imperviousness”
In recent years, local governments have become aware of the importance for proper responsibility in the management of stormwater runoff; which is currently the largest source of water pollution in the United States. As concern for the environment has grown, many local governments have taken the controversial step of implementing a stormwater utility to pay for the costly maintenance of aging stormwater infrastructures. The City of Roswell provides incentives in the form of credits for certain practices that benefit Roswell’s stormwater management program.
Currently, citizens of Roswell can receive a low-impact parcel credit if they have less than 15% impervious area in comparison to their total lot size. This case study will demonstrate that the underlying soil type in conjunction with land cover can produce a more accurate calculation for the runoff impact of a parcel. This project will challenge the belief that stormwater credits should be based on impervious surface alone. Attendees will learn how stormwater management programs can benefit from GIS based parcel analysis. Through a GIS based approach, increased revenue and positive environmental impacts can be attained.
Presenter: Nancy Velez – City of Roswell
Nancy Velez is the GIS Analyst in the Environmental/Public Works Department for the City of Roswell, Georgia. Her responsibilities include database design, implementation, maintenance, geospatial analysis and management for all environmental and public works GIS projects. She also aids in GPS project coordination and training for the city. Nancy is currently working towards taking the water and stormwater GIS mobile for city crews to use in real time. Nancy’s interest in GIS began while she was an Investigative Specialist with the FBI. While assigned to the Counter Intelligence/Counter Terrorism Unit, she developed an appreciation for tracking and analyzing target location and movement patterns. Nancy has completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in GIS from Kennesaw State University and her Post Baccalaureate Certificate in GIS from Pennsylvania State University. With the completion of this presentation, she will complete her Master’s Degree in GIS from Pennsylvania State University. Nancy holds her GISP certification and has previously served as the URISA International liaison for Georgia and Alabama.
