Open Street Map is a collabroative map of the world that was founded in July of 2004. Data can be collected from Aerial Photography, GPS devices, or plain paper maps and uploaded to Open StreetMap. In the US the map was started with a bulk import of Tiger Census Data. From that we start editing and moving roads, streams, and data in general. The more people that edit the map - the better the map becomes.

Over the last few months I have had the chance to work with Cloudmade and Georgia URISA in updating the map in Atlanta Georgia. While work runs on in Georgia I'm trying to kick start an effort to update the map in Chattanooga Tn., by adding businesses, hiking trails, bike routes, and parks. This map is not so much about accuracy as it is about what users find important.

The best place to start is here. Several software packages are available for editing: JOSM, Merkaator, and Potlatch.
